Camera as Passport

ICEBOX GALLERY PRESENTS:

CAMERA as PASSPORT by ULVIS ALBERTS

SEE EXHIBIT

Ulvis Alberts will be exhibiting thirty-one of his most iconic B&W images for the very first time in the mid-west. Many of the images in this exhibit are vintage silver-gelatin, signed and numbered prints in an edition of 10. The title of this exhibit is CAMERA as PASSPORT.

Ulvis Alberts was born in Riga, Latvia and immigrated to the U.S.A. with his family from a "displaced persons" camp in Ravensburg, Germany in 1949. "My first photographs were in the streets of Seattle in the late l960's. My father, a painter and architect gave me my first camera, a $100 Pentax with a 50mm lens." He said, "go out and make money!"

Ulvis graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a B.A. degree in radio/television. Some of his first photographs were of Bob Dylan (1966), Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead (1967) and Seattle born guitarist, Jimi Hendrix (1968). The Hendrix photographs are now in Paul Allen's collection at the Experience Music Project museum at the Seattle center.

In 1973, on the basis of his short and documentary films, he was invited to audit the filmmaker's program at the American Film Institute in Beverly Hills. He moved to Los Angeles, worked on films and photographed some of the most celebrated movie personalities of the 1970's and early 1980's. They included: Groucho Marx, Christopher Reeve, John Wayne, Peter Sellers, Nick Nolte, Jack Nicholson, Jack Lemmon, Paul Newman and others.

"I planned on returning to Seattle, but Hollywood doors opened up a bit and my still camera became a "visit card." He ended up living and photographing there for 17 more years. Ulvis Alberts currently lives at Haven Lake/Washington but has been travelling regularly back to his "roots" since 1983, when Latvia was still an occupied country behind the Iron Curtain.

Ulvis Alberts is represented in Riga, Latvia and Europe by Toms Zvirbulis, owner of the Birkenfelds Gallery.

Ulvis Alberts 362 page book of photographs "Camera as Passport" (1966-2008) will be available at the Icebox Gallery and he will happily sign it for you. He will also have some of his posters and his other book "Poker Face 2" (1977-2006) on the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas available.
